Kazakh hacker who threatened Bloomberg jailed

A Kazakh citizen was sentenced on Tuesday to more than four years in prison for hacking into Bloomberg LP's computer system in an attempt to extort $200,000 from the business news service and its founder, Michael Bloomberg, now New York City's mayor.
US District Judge Kimba Wood sentenced Oleg Zezev to one of the longest terms ever given for computer intrusion, federal prosecutors said.
The trial received a great deal of publicity because Bloomberg testified about meeting with Zezev in London in August of 2000 as part of a scheme to catch the defendant. Zezev was arrested at that time.
Zezev also made a surprising escape attempt during the trial as he began heading for the back of the room by jumping onto the backs of courtroom benches.
Zezev planned to use confidential information belonging to Bloomberg and its customers to threaten Michael Bloomberg, telling him that if he did not pay him $200,000 he would disclose this information to customers and the media in an effort to harm his reputation.

Ein angeblicher Millionen-Einkauf beim Internet-Auktionshaus eBay hat sich als übler Scherz eines 32-jährigen Münchner Kraftfahrers entpuppt. Der Mann war an die eBay-Accountinformationen eines 22-jährigen Freundes gelangt und hatte so im April unter dessen Namen ein 30.000 Quadratmeter großes Grundstück in Leipzig für 1,2 Millionen Euro ersteigert. Nach aufwendigen Ermittlungen beim Provider wurde der Täter ermittelt. Als Motiv habe er angegeben, dass er am fraglichen Abend betrunken gewesen sei und sich gelangweilt habe, berichtete die Staatsanwaltschaft München I gegenüber dpa.
Der 32-Jährige hatte unter dem Namen seines Freundes außerdem ein Nobelauto, ein Ultraleichtflugzeug, eine Barockgeige, einen Hubwagen, ein Blutzuckermessgerät und andere Gegenstände ersteigert. Er muss sich nun demnächst wegen strafbarer Datenveränderung vor Gericht verantworten. Betrug könne man ihm nicht vorwerfen, da er sich nicht in den Besitz der ersteigerten Waren bringen wollte, hieß es. Sein Freund, ein 22-Jähriger Gärtner, hatte sich zunächst als Opfer eines unbekannten Cyber-Kriminellen gesehen und Anzeige erstattet. Der 32-Jährige muss nun auch mit Schadenersatzforderungen der geleimten eBay-Anbieter rechnen. Und auch von Seiten eBays droht ihm Ungemach: "Wir prüfen auf Grund des entstandenen Schadens, gegen den Täter vorzugehen", erklärte Joachim M. Guentert, Pressesprecher von eBay Deutschland. Religious Law Makers Blocking Internet
In a continuing effort to remove all that is "corrupt and evil" from this world, religious leaders in some parts of the world, are increasingly instigating efforts to censor a range of information reaching people via internet. Filtering software, firewalls and monitoring of net usage at cafes has formed the bases of many censorship efforts. Pornography seems to be the major type information that is deemed offensive. In Saudi Arabia, officials are clamping down on internet cafes, while in Iran, the effort is aimed at getting ISP's to block objectionable material by issuing a list of degenerate websites deemed inappropriate. Pakistan is developing software to filter the internet, so that the people can be protected. Findlaw recently had a good article titled Hacking for Free Speech which goes into more detail, while the Hacktivismo or Peekabooty organisations a working on a number of projects related to internet censorship activism. Unfortunately religious morality and censorship is just one aspect of the deteriorating situation for freedom of press and speech internationally. [infoAnarchy]
